Red Women

Over 800,000 women fought on the eastern front with the Red Army during the great Patriotic War. First as medics and other auxiliary roles as most were rejected for frontline duty. Many women were found to say nuts to that and picked up a gun and joined in the fighting. Many women distinguished themselves during the war such as the Night Witches flyers, Snipers, Tank Drivers, Machine Gunners, Political Officers, Medics, Communications, and Resistance Fighters. Of all these, 92 women were recognized with their country’s highest honor, Hero of the Soviet Union. The photos and posters below are just a small example of these heroic women's activities during the war.
